Description:

Impulse is a bit of eye-candy for your desktop. It is a widget that displays a graphical spectrum analyzer on your gnome desktop. It is written in c and python and uses GTK and cairo graphics to generate the animation. the impulse library creates a pulse audio connection context that reads the output stream from pulseaudio in a thread natively which can then be read from python. You can specify impulse to either output the raw stream or output the fft of the raw stream.

Requires:
screenlets 1.2
libfftw3-3
libpulse0

Install:
1) Download and extract Impulse.tar.bz2
2) mv Impulse ~/.screenlets/
then open up the screenlets manager and start Impulse or open screenlets manager and click Install, navigate to the Impulse.tar.bz2 archive and click ok.

 Excellent concept

by holodeck on: Aug 7 2009

This is a great concept of desktop utilization. All that needs to be done is GPU rendering. But while it uses 90% of my CPU it's a huge distraction as I can't do anything else while it's running.

90%! really? Thats extremely high, very strange. It runs at an average of 3% CPU on my system. I can't imagine your computer is that dated. I see you are a programmer, if you feel inclined I'd be interested to see a profile of impulse on your system. You can get the code here: https://launchpad.net/impulse.bzr

Well it depends on which theme I use. The Circle LCD uses almost all of my CPU. The others run at about 30%. And it's not outdated, it's a Core 2 Duo T1700.

I might take a look at the code, but I can't promise anything since I'm rather busy lately.

Good job so far though.

I have same problem.
Core2Duo @1.8GHz, and Impulse uses around 30% of my CPU (even without any sound - Idle).
By the way, it is really cool thing :)

Hey,
Thats not the problem with any particular screenlet but screenlet itself. I've used ring meters and had the same issues. Try this instead of restarting logout, login and then restart or else wait till next update of kernel (generally it get fixed with kernel update). The third solution I don't remember but I think it had something to do with modifying config for screenlets. But for me login logout worked so never tried it. Hope it will work for u as well :)

 CPU Usage

by MikeLJ on: Sep 28 2009

Score 50%

At first it didn't work, now it uses 70% of my CPU (on a brand new computer). I'm tempted to keep it running because it looks so nice, although that's somewhat impractical. Its a great screenlet, I hope the bugs are ironed out soon.

 Pulseaudio

Hi guys,
I've removed pulseaudio and using esound as otherwise skype won't work, I'm not sure if they have fixed pulseaudio since Ubuntu9.04 is launched. Can anyone confirm and let me know if there is a way to use this screenlet with esound or using pulseaudio with skype.
Anyway the screenlet looks awesome I would like to try it soon
Thanks

nice work :)
works perfect

i just want to say one suggestion:
if you can, add potentiometer to adjust speed of those lines (time to line from some position go down to the bottom)

eg. bass kicks it, and line goes like this:
-
-
-- --
-------
and from once is silence and lines go like this:

-------
but i think it should go slower to the bottom:

-
-- --
-------
>>>eg. 300ms<<<

--
-------
>>>eg. 300ms<<<

-------

I hope that i explained good, english isn't my native language :)
