 Installation?

by BlackTopBum on: Oct 4 2007

Score 50%

New with these gDesklets. Tried to install 66609-ClearWeather03.tar.bz2 via gDeskets Shell (version 0.35.3) on my Debian Etch system, yet there's an error:
Quote:

Installation failed

The package could not be installed because it contained no installable files.

Please inform me as how to use your applet - looks lovely.

Thanks.

OK, made the folder and extracted the tar ball. I tried the command:
gdesklets .screenlets/ClearWeather/ClearWeatherScreenlet.py and with 'start' and didn't it run. Clicked on the *.py and can't load it. Could not install via the gDesklets Shell. What else needs to be done, please?

Thanks for your assistance.

Think I know what the problem is; screenlets in not available for Debian Etch. I'll look into what is needed to get and use screenlets.

The problem is you're using gdesklets, and this is made for screenlets; two different programs.

 Postcodes?

where can i find instructions on how to make this Weather screenlet work. It just shows "no weather information available"

Also i need to know how to configure the postcode setting for an Australian city, is this possible, as many applications tend to be USA only.

RE: Configuring this for Non-U.S. Cities...

Go to www.weather.com

At the top, enter the name of the city you want instead of the U.S. Zip Code... click on GO

This will take you to a page listing cities matching that name.

Mouse over the city you want.. look at the status bar at the bottom and you'll see the URL it refers to...You'll see an 8 character string before the "?" mark...

This is what the site uses instead of a postal code... in the case of Sydney, NSW the code is ASXX0112

Use this in the configuration of the screenlet settings instead of the zip code.

Hope this helps.

Paul

 patch for proxies

by stezz on: Nov 2 2007

Score 50%

Hi, I'm sorry I wanted to vote good but I clicked on "bad" :( (is there a way to change the vote?)

I'm behind a proxy and the gnome default proxy setting are not taken in consideration (maybe because I have an automatic proxy config file?)

So I made this small patch for who has the same problem. Unfortunately you have to set the "proxies" value before starting the screenlets otherwise it hangs forever.

There is an option in the properties of the screenlet to use imperial over metric units. This toggles between Fahrenheit an Celsius. Hope this helps.

Screenlets are made to be run with a composited window manager, e.g., Compiz. That black box will show up with all of them if you're not running one.
