 Arrrrrgh!!!

by truckerpunk on: Jan 26 2011

Most annoying app EVER!! Keeps spamming "useless" terminal codes every 10 sec's. And no icon appears in you panel, so you can't turn it of easily, or change the preferences so that it won't mega-spam you. Uninstalled it through synaptic, but after that it just kept spamming me with with error messages, instead of "tips". Damn.... Too annoying to be true. Wow, just wow.

Hey, it's false. Tested. BTW you can't set 10 seconds interval, only 1 minute at least.

 Whoa!

I found this app at LifeHacker where the writer thought it was great. But the above comment has me hesitant to give it a try.

Try it :)
So everything will install to '/usr/share/ubuntu-tips-applet' and desktop-file will be in '/usr/share/applications'.

If something will be wrong, just type this in terminal:

sudo rm -r /usr/share/ubuntu-tips-applet && sudo rm /usr/share/applications/ubuntu-tips-applet.desktop

Thanks for the encouragement. I installed it, and it's working fine in my Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit Minimal CD install with Cairo Dock as the window manager and dock.

A small problem is that Cairo's tray applet does not display the icon, even though ubuntutips-panel.svg displays in the dock. The tray applet shows the "missing file" icon, a sheet of paper with a red X.

Oh crap :(
I didn't test it for Cairo, only for the GNOME panel.
May be Cairo wants 'png' icon instead 'svg' icon. I don't know. I'll try to fix it in the next update.

 Timed Display of Tip

by LaneLester on: Jan 27 2011

Score 50%

I really like the fact that the tip goes away after a time and we don't have to click an X.

From observing the app's action, I would really like to see an option in the preferences to set how long a tip displays. We need time not only to read the tip, but to think about it. What does it mean? Is it worth remembering?

You're right. But it's notify-osd trouble. Look: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/390508

This bug has been around for 1.5 years. It's confirmed with nobody assigned to fix it.

So I'm sorry, but it's impossible to set show-up time.

Another small program I enjoy is check-gmail, which presents a small popup whenever a new message arrives at my Gmail account. It is possible to set the length of display with that program... however, I observe that it uses a different library (or something) to generate the popup.

Yep, 'checkgmail' creates widget and shows it so long as you want. And it's idea for me.

 Display time control?

by eduap on: Jan 28 2011

I find this quite useful, that said having control over how long the tips are displayed would help to take the time to read the ones that one can be interested in.

Is there any way to control the display time of tips?

Regards

Eduardo

This is a very usefull app, however sometimes it has a link to a website in it and I cannot copy this ... Is there a way to show the previous tip again or to get the text of a tip (from the repository perhaps)?

thx a lot for this app

Hi,

Now I'm developing a widget with the ability to copy text, use links and set time period instead Notify-osd notifications without that. I hope it'll help you.
