Score 76%
CoverChooser
zoom

Minimum required   GNOME 2.x
Downloads:  4993
Submitted:  Dec 19 2009
Updated:  Apr 27 2011

Description:

CoverChooser is a small application, that searches albumart at the internet and downloads your choosen file.
Run CoverChooser and enjoy (Applications -> Accessoires -> CoverChooser).

By applying the script at a music-file (or a folder that contains music-files) the script will use the metadata to get the interpret/album-info. It saves the selected file into the selected folder. By applying on a folder which contains subfolders (.../interpret/Album), images of the artist will be fetched.
Metadata of the following filetypes will be automatically detected: mp3, ogg, flac, m4a, mpc

To use the Amazon webservice you will need a personally key. Get this key for free at http://aws.amazon.com/ and apply the key into the settings.

Recommended Installation (Debian/Ubuntu):
Run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:panthora/coverchooser-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install coverchooser

that's it

Manual installation (Debian/Ubuntu):
Download and install the deb package

Other Distros
Download the source tarball and read the readme file.

Run CoverChooser
Run coverchooser by choosing Applications -> Accessories -> CoverChooser.
To use the Nautilus-script: go to preferences and hit on the Nautilus script button to add the Starter for nautilus-scripts.

Using nautilus-actions instead of nautilus-script
If you would like to use nautilus-actions instead, use the values:
"coverchooser -g" and "--path %d/%f"

Change settings
Use the preferences at the gui.

Enjoy the new release and please tell us your experiance with this script. So I can improove it!

 Nice

Works great in Lucid

I think you need to install nautilus-script-manager before this if you haven't got any other scripts, then once you right click on a folder you have a menu

The first time you have to openit by:
Applications > Utillities > CoverChooser
The script will then automatically place the launcher into the nautilus-script folder. I have tried it with the Ubuntu live cd (to have a clean os). After this first step the "scripts" option will appear in the context menu.
Hope that helps!

Ah thanks, I tried a couple of things at once including logging out and I wasn't sure which made it appear.

You are right I did run /usr/bin/CoverChooser to test it.

Unfortunately it does not work with flac files :/
Would it be possible to add flac support in a future version.

 Artist Picture

When a few albums are inside a folder, would be really nice to have the artist picture for the cover (so then, we could use the Cover Thumbnailer there)

I've see that you use the Lastfm API, so there's a quick way to get the pictures:

http://www.lastfm.es/api/show?service=407

just parse the larguesquare image and you are done. :D

Nice coding.

 Questions

 by ace214 on: Dec 22 2009

Thanks for the useful script. Two questions:
Which Amazon key should be used, and should it be the entire key? I tried the "Access Key ID" and the "Secret Access Key" and neither of them produced any results (or error messages) for Amazon.

Also, is there a way to change the file name from folder.jpg to cover.jpg? Perhaps an option in .conf file?

Hello,
at first to your second question: actually this is not possible, but in the next version you can change the default file name at the conf file. Im working hard on it, but please wait a few days.

For the Amazon module you will need a key, called "Access Key" in the email from Amazon. My key consists about 20 signs (letters and numbers).
Be sure to write "KEYS Amazon:XXXXXXXXXX" into the conf file (no # at the start and the Xs replaced).
You can try to test the following url in your browser (replace the XXX...)

http://free.apisigning.com/onca/xml?Service=AWSECommerceService&AWSAccessKeyId=XXXXXXXXXXXXX&Operation=ItemSearch&SearchIndex=Music&Artist=Fugazi&ResponseGroup=Images&Keywords=Repeater

If you get a xml-page, it should be the right key

I hope this helps

Thanks- it must be a problem with my access key. I pasted the one that the Amazon website gives me, but it doesn't work in your script or on the page you linked me to.

At the Amazon homepage the Key is called:
Access Key ID
I have seen, that their homepage is a bit confused. To find your key (if you allready got one), go here:

https://aws-portal.amazon.com/gp/aws/developer/account/index.html?action=access-key

This is not a bug.
Apply the script directly on a folder or a music file (rightklick, scripts -> CoverChooser), then the active folder will be automatically set! There is no other way to set the active folder!
