Updated:  Jun 2 2011

Description:

UPDATE New version is currently underway. I so far have better tablet detection, the new features of xsetwacom implemented, Intuos4 OLEDs working with both images, text and animations and application profiles that automatically switch the button configuration. Please hang in there everyone, I know the current version up here sucks and this overhaul is long overdue. Check back in a month or two.

THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH UBUNTU 11.04
I will fix the compatibility issues when I have the time to do so.

You can now easily configure a wacom tablet on linux!
This utility allows you to:
- Automatically detect and configure a wide range of wacom products
- Set custom key commands or mouse buttons to a tablet's shortcut buttons
- Set custom pressure curve on each of the tablet's input devices
- Automatically remembers and reapplies settings on startup
- At present, serial and bluetooth tablets are not yet supported. If it doesn't work for you, submit a comment on here so I can fix it.
- More features coming!

HOW TO INSTALL:
======================
Add the PPA to get the latest updates automatically!
Quote:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hughescih/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wacom-utility

HOW TO USE PRESSURE SUPPORT IN GIMP:
====================================
1. Open GIMP
2. In the Edit menu, click on preferences
3. Click on Input Devices
4. Click on Configure Extended Input Devices
5. For the devices; stylus, eraser and cursor, set the Mode to 'Screen'
6. Click Save, then Ok and you're done!

This graphical configuration tool for Wacom tablets is such a relief and a welcome utility, after years of hand-editing xorg.conf and more recently HAL .fdi files. (Does this wacom utility conflict with HAL .fdi files? Should one delete any custom Wacom .fdi file from /etc/hal/fdi/policy ?) Thank you for creating this wonderful gift to the Linux (and *BSD?) community.

For those who may not know where to find this program once it is installed, it is not a standalone program in a /bin directory but instead, in Gnome, is found in System-> Preferences-> Wacom Control Panel.

I hope this Wacom control panel gets into the Ubuntu and all the other Linux distributions' official repositories.

THANK YOU! :-)

Thanks. I'm glad you like it - I was too frustrated with the lack of support for wacom tablets, and saw no resolution in sight, hence was compelled to write the utility.
I tested it on a brand new install of ubuntu 9.04 and found that it worked around the HAL fdi files and there was no need to delete them, simply unchecking tablet support put the system back to it's default settings and functionality.

gb89dragon: "...simply unchecking tablet support put the system back to it's default settings and functionality."

This is not clear to me. Where would one uncheck tablet support (in which file or graphical configuration utility)?

Also, I have noticed that after the Wacom Tablet Configuration utility/control panel writes to the xorg.conf file, if the Wacom tablet is subsequently unplugged from the USB port and the computer restarted, Xorg issues a startup error (about unable to find device /dev/input/wacom) and refuses to start. Does this relate to HAL? Should the xorg.conf file be edited by hand in some way?

Thanks for such a great utility. Best wishes--

I have noticed that issue, and will look into it. When you check or uncheck tablet support it adds or removed the relevant lines in xorg.conf. It may be an issue with the lines that it has added, may be an issue introduced by a new xserver version with ubuntu 9.04 (as the same configuration has worked fine in the past for me), or could be caused by the HAL not being disabled for tablets. I'll look into it and get that fixed.

 Wrong Image Wacom Bamboo One

Hi again, my tablet already show the other options thanks!

But the image for my tablet is wrong. It show a image for Wacom Bamboo with buttons, but my model of Wacom is like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-One-Graphics-Tablet/dp/B000VZZCSO

Could you change/update the image for my model?

And other stuff is that this model don't have buttons (only two wit a pen) but not four like now in the tablet.

Regards

Hi! The image model is right now. But no options stylus, eraser or cursor are shown.

My xorg yet contains the lines that you suggested in serverlayout:

InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents"

should they be show or not?

Try disabling and re-enabling pressure support with the latest version. If that doesn't fix it, send me your entire xorg.conf file.

What exactly isn't working with the pressure and pad? What is it doing?
Can you send me the output of lsusb in a terminal - that helps me make changes to your exact model's info.
Thanks!

I have no idea what relative mode should do. This came from alexander macdonald's side of the code (the pressure support screen).
Anyhow, it looks like everything else is working fine for you, you just need to tell gimp to use your tablet.
To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open GIMP
2. In the Edit menu, click on preferences
3. Click on Input Devices
4. Click on Configure Extended Input Devices
5. For the devices; stylus, eraser and cursor, set the Mode to 'Screen'
6. Click Save, then Ok and you're done!

yea i already tried configuring the tablet in gimp...the stylus works fine under absolute mode but nothing happens when i use relative mode in gimp...i use jaunty and i didnt have this problem in intrepid...

basically absolute mode...the tablet is the monitor, so if you put the stylus on the left corner tablet, the cursor will be on the left corner on the screen...relative mode gives your more freedom...

 Arch + Intuos3 6x8 issues

by FrozenFox on: Jun 11 2009

Score 50%

Hello,

I've done a quick conversion on your deb to Arch Linux (pkgbuild script) format. When you have the non-deb source available, I'll redo it and post it to the user repo. It worked fine, as I see every file in it that was in the original deb. The program also runs nearly properly as far as I can tell. If you need to see the script or someone else wants to try it, its tarballed here (will be removed when posted on AUR): http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=688489f40c3fda395a3d773badf21430ffc4f66a938e59c2ce018c8114394287

Issues:

1) I needed to *totally* reboot instead of just log out and in for it to work, otherwise it would just show the one options section with the 2 checkboxes. Which is pretty bizarre, considering it only made changes to xorg.conf afaict. Whatever, it worked. This might have nothing to do with your program though, this is more just to let others know, if you don't see other options and stuff is checked properly, reboot.

2) On the Intuos3 6x8, the button mapping is messed up. How might I help you fix that?

3) If I edit one of the buttons, one of the others will change to the same button-response on its own o_O. Ie, I changed button 1 to "K" and button 4 or something changed to "K". Changing button 2 to "L" then also randomly changed 3 to "L". Or something to that effect. Really weird. This may be related to #2, though at one point I believe if I changed one, it would immediately change the *next* one.

4) I notice when you click 'edit' for a button, the drop down list has a load of empty spaces before starting, but scrolling a little down then back up fixes it. No biggie though.

Thank you for this utility, my sister will undoubtedly appreciate it, being an artist type who finds Linux lacking such necessary friendly hardware cfg GUIs.

Hello..???

I noticed a week after my previous post, you responded to the person *below* me but didn't say anything to this.. another week-ish later, nothing here still.. I'm sure you're busy, but could you at least respond? It seems kind of weird you'd just skim over this and answer the next person without comment.. An "I'm working on it" or "I'm not going to fix it" or "I'll get back to you" or "Give me this information", something, anything would do..

I'd like to *help* get this fixed if I can, by perhaps providing you with a correct button map or something. I'd go ahead and give you output from xev or something, but I don't know if that would be what you need..

Hi there, sorry for not getting back to you - there was alot to look at in your post and I have been very busy with work lately. I will take a look at the buttons editing one or more items, but I can't fix the mapping until that is resolved. Your fourth issue is related to pygtk and how it renders large lists. For the button mapping, I had to guess all the other tablets and then rely on user feedback to fix them, so I would appreciate your assistance in getting it right. I haven't had to reboot when testing on two ubuntu 9.04 installs. What version of what distro required you to reboot.
Another thing, there will be no rpm distro versions released for the next while because some of them cannot work with the gksu command that is required.
When I fix the button mapping on the next release on here, please let me know the correct button mapping and I'll include that.

Awesome, thanks. Tested and your fix works great.

As for what version, Arch doesn't -have- a version per se, it is a rolling release distro. Any Arch CD can be upgraded to be current pretty much. Mine is just up-to-date / synchronized with the mirrors. It can take a lot of time to set up, and does not have any official graphical livecd. As such, I figure it is not worth your time to look into that problem, it is very minor and could well be a problem with my own setup. If you wish to anyway though, the Chakra livecd's available are unofficial Arch + KDEMod4, and would accomplish the same thing. I've not tried them personally though.

Hahah, I just noticed I forgot to remove the putty-svn line from the pkgbuild I posted earlier for 1.5 (I used another pkgbuild I made as a template for this one). Oops.

As for button order.. I gave the buttons 1-12 corresponding letters A-L, then typed in the console in button order. I got:

CABDGEFHIJKL

So basically, it looks like buttons 4 and 8 and the touch strips are correct, but the others are not.

I'm not sure if that is what you need. If not, please let me know what to do :)

Indeed it is :)

Everything works fine now as far as I can tell.

I have one more thing to bug you about though. It's trivial, and somewhere between a bug report and feature request. The window by default is too small in width to see the entire button scheme in the reference/view area, thus requiring it to be resized. Could the window be auto-resized by compensating for the image's width?

Thanks a bunch!

 Question about serial tablet

Hello

I just find this utility.

Does it detect the serial tablet ?

I just made a new install of Jaunty. I made some changes in xorg.conf so the tablet work a little bit (well, with 1 or 2 seconds delay). This tablet worked fine in Ubuntu 8.04 (after adding some # in xorg.conf and changing /dev/wacom with /dev/ttyS0).

I tried Wacom control panel, but it say that I have not tablet.

Any idea ?

Nope, serial tablets aren't supported I'm afraid. Your best bet is to follow the guide to configure your xorg.conf manually. Install the wacom-tools package and run wacomcpl from the command line.

 Error on boot (low-graphics)

Hi,

I've tried the Wacom Control Panel 1.5.1 and now 1.8.1. It works fine as long as I don't unplug my Intuos 3 A5. When so, I've got a boot error telling xorg.conf has an error :

Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
(EE)xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/wacom

Then I have to reset xorg.conf...

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, on a Dell Precision M65 laptop (NVidia graphic card, with open-source driver) and on a IBM X31 laptop (ATI graphic cart, with open-source driver).

Thanks for your help !

Hi there,
I am aware of this problem and I plan to remove all xorg.conf configuration and work solely with the new HAL system that now fully supports pressure sensitivity. Please be patient and I'll get it done as soon as possible so that there is a config-free process for configuring a tablet. For now though, you can remove the lines from xorg.conf by unchecking the box in the 'options' screen before shutting down the computer to save the hassle of rewriting your xorg.conf from scratch.
